Archway

History of Archway

Midway between Highgate and Islington in North London, Archway’s story begins at the turn of the 20th Century when a small local arched bridge gave rise to the 1km sq now called Archway.

Archway is also situated on the Great North Road from Aldersgate up to what was the toll road up Highgate Hill and the area straddles parts of Highgate, Upper Holloway and a very small part of Islington.

According to legend, Dick Whittington & his cat heard the sound of bow bells calling him back to London from half way up Highgate Hill and to this day, a stone sculpture commemorates the famous spot.

For more eclectic eateries, Crouch End and Kentish Town are just a quick hop on one of the many buses passing by. Just in case, it’s also good to know that Whittington Hospital is just up the road.
