Midway between Highgate and Islington in North London, Archway’s story begins at the turn of the 20th Century when a small local arched bridge gave rise to the 1km sq now called Archway.
Archway is also situated on the Great North Road from Aldersgate up to what was the toll road up Highgate Hill and the area straddles parts of Highgate, Upper Holloway and a very small part of Islington.
According to legend, Dick Whittington & his cat heard the sound of bow bells calling him back to London from half way up Highgate Hill and to this day, a stone sculpture commemorates the famous spot.
Over the past few years, Archway has been transformed from a fairly unexciting suburb on the fringe of Zone 2 on the Northern Line, to a vibey and increasingly trendy regeneration project centred around Vantage Point, formerly known as Archway Tower above Archway Station.
Now Archway has a pedestrianised area with independent cafes, excellent bars featuring live music and plenty of independent shops, late-night spots and an abundance of casual restaurants featuring tasty food from around the world.
Just around the corner is the great open space at Whittington Park, along with the timeless village feel of Highgate on top of Highgate Hill. For more eclectic eateries, Crouch End and Kentish Town are just a quick hop on one of the many buses passing by. Just in case, it’s also good to know that Whittington Hospital is just up the road.
Archway also has some celebrities : Imelda Staunton, actress, Reggie Yates, DJ and TV presenter, Miss Dynamite, rapper.
